Electronic Travel Authorization Canada

The Electronic Travel Authorization process will start on August 1, 2015. However, will be a requirement starting March 15, 2016. It will be electronically linked to your passport and valid for 5 years or until passport expiry.

Who will need an Electronic Travel Authorization Canada (eTA)

If you do not normally need a visa to enter Canada, you will need to get an Electronic Travel Authorization.

Some exemptions will apply.

U.S. citizens do not need an Electronic Travel Authorization or a visa. However, proper identification must be presented at the border.

U.S. permanent residents need to get an Electronic Travel Authorization to fly to Canada.

It appears while some countries, like India are making the visa application process easier with the implementation of the e-Tourist visa Canada (click here). Other countries, such as Canada are introducing more Canadian visa requirements. For example, all visa applications to Canada will soon require bio metrics (2018-19). Moreover, visa exempt travelers to Canada by airport will soon need an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA).

This Electronic Travel Authorization, in my opinion, is a solution to the number of visa exempt visitors to Canada denied entry. With person being pre-screened, it will cut down on wait times and reduce government/tax payer costs. An example cost is the return air fare the Canadian government could pay to send someone back to their visa exempt country of residence. Also, this Electronic Travel Authorization benefits those who are visa exempt and unsure about their inadmissibility to Canada. Instead of learning at the airport and having to return home unexpected.
