“Starting in summer 2022, former international students who are in Canada and have a post-graduation work permit expiring between January and December 2022 will qualify for an additional open work permit of up to 18 months. We are exploring a simplified, expeditious process for this, and details will be made available in the weeks ahead.”

The government says approximately 95,000 PGWP‘s expire between 31 January and 31 December 2022, and that while thousands of students with expiring PGWP‘s have already obtained permanent residence, many of others have not. They anticipate “as many as 50,000 applicants could benefit from this temporary measure.” Without this temporary measure, those students would have had to leave Canada.
